Heavy-duty lathes are core equipment for processing large and heavy workpieces in the mechanical processing field and are widely used in key industries such as heavy industry, energy, and rail transit. Unlike ordinary small lathes, the workpiece weight of heavy-duty lathes can reach several tons or even tens of tons. The equipment structure is complex and the cutting load is large. Any oversight in details during operation may lead to equipment damage, workpiece scrapping or even personal safety accidents. To use heavy-duty lathes safely and efficiently, it is not only necessary to master the basic operation steps, but also to have the awareness of safety norms, detail control and long-term maintenance throughout the process.

Ⅰ. Before Operation: Safety preparations should be implemented in every detail. Many safety accidents of heavy-duty lathes originate from the preparatory stage before operation. Before the official startup, the operator must complete three core checks without the slightest perfunctory attitude. The first step is the confirmation of personal protection. Tight-fitting protective clothing must be worn, with the cuffs fully fastened. The hem of the jacket must not be left open. It is strictly forbidden to operate with gloves on. Long hair must be fully tucked into the work cap. It is not allowed to enter the workshop wearing slippers or loose skirts. At the same time, anti-splash goggles and soundproof earplugs should be worn in advance to avoid injuries caused by iron filings and equipment noise. The second is a comprehensive inspection of the equipment status. First, check whether all the operation handles are in the safe initial position, confirm that there is no leakage in the electrical system and the emergency stop button is functioning properly. Then, check the oil level and temperature of the lubrication system one by one, and clean the lubricating oil pump to avoid poor oil supply. Then, check that the cooling system pipelines are unobstructed and free of blockages. Finally, conduct a 2-3 minute low-speed no-load test run to observe whether there are any abnormal noises or jamming in the operation of the main shaft and the status of the transmission components. The last step is the clamping and verification of the workpiece and the tool. After heavy workpieces are hoisted onto the chuck, they must be repeatedly tightened with special fixtures and screws. For eccentric workpieces, counterweight balance should be done in advance to prevent the workpieces from loosening and being thrown out during processing. When installing the cutting tool, make sure the tool rest is firmly clamped. Adjust the lateral and longitudinal travel of the tool in advance to ensure that the contact position between the tool tip and the workpiece is precise. After clamping is completed, the chuck wrench must be removed to prevent the wrench from flying out and causing an accident after starting the machine.

Ⅱ, during operation: Standardized procedures take into account both precision and safety

Only after all the preparatory work is completed can the equipment be started in accordance with the standard procedure and enter the formal processing stage. When starting up the equipment, stand on the safe side of the device and avoid facing the rotating chuck directly. Complete the steps in sequence: "Turn on the main power supply - turn on the working lighting (must use a safe voltage below 36V) - pull out the emergency stop button - start the main motor". Control the forward, stop and reverse rotation of the main shaft through the control lever. Pay close attention to the operation status of the equipment throughout the process. During the processing, the cutting parameters must be strictly controlled. The appropriate spindle speed and feed rate should be selected based on the material and hardness of the workpiece. One should not blindly pursue efficiency and overload processing. When performing longitudinal and transverse automatic feed, it is necessary to confirm the limit position of the feed stroke in advance. Before pressing the rapid feed button, it is essential to ensure that there are no obstacles around the tool to avoid tool collision. When turning threads, press down the handle of the opening and closing nut to ensure precise engagement between the lead screw and the slide box. In non-thread processing scenarios, do not use the opening and closing nut for a long time to avoid unnecessary wear of the lead screw and affect the accuracy of subsequent thread processing. There are several red lines that must not be crossed throughout the operation process: When the equipment is running, it is strictly forbidden to touch the rotating workpieces or tools with hands. When cleaning iron filings, a special iron hook or brush must be used; it is absolutely not allowed to pull directly with hands. During operation, it is strictly prohibited to pass objects across the lathe or leave the operating post. Once any abnormal noise or vibration is detected, the emergency stop button should be pressed immediately, and the tool should be removed before checking for faults. When processing slender workpieces, a center rest must be installed at an appropriate position to prevent the workpiece from being bent and deformed under the action of centrifugal force, which may cause safety accidents.

Ⅲ. Post-operation: Finishing and maintenance extend the service life of the equipment

The finishing work after the completion of processing tasks is the key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of equipment. Many operators tend to overlook this step, which may pose hidden dangers for the subsequent operation of the equipment. First, withdraw the cutting tool from the workpiece processing area, stop the spindle operation, press the emergency stop button, then turn off the lighting in sequence and cut off the main power supply. After confirming that the equipment is completely powered off, disassemble the workpiece and the cutting tool. Then, clean the chips in the operation area, wipe the tools, jigs and measuring tools clean and put them back in the designated positions. Do not stack them randomly on the machine tool guide rails. In daily maintenance, the transmission components and guide rail surfaces of heavy-duty lathes should be cleaned regularly, and the lubricating oil and filter elements should be replaced periodically to ensure smooth oil supply at all lubrication points. Regularly calibrate the feed accuracy of the equipment, and check whether the functions of safety devices such as protective doors and warning lights are in good condition. Once any worn parts or abnormal functions are found, contact maintenance personnel immediately for handling. Do not let the equipment operate with damage.

Ⅳ. The operational guidelines engraved in the heart

The operation of a heavy-duty lathe is never simply about "pressing buttons and moving the tool". It tests the operator's patience, meticulousness and a sense of awe towards the rules. From a newcomer in the workshop to a skilled craftsman who can skillfully operate heavy-duty lathes, it has never relied on "boldness", but rather on engraving every safety regulation into habits and being meticulous and rigorous in every clamping and cutting operation. Amid the rumbling sounds of machine tools, every standardized operation is not only a responsibility for one's own safety, but also a respect for large and precise equipment, and it is the most practical practice of the "craftsman spirit" by the robots.
