Universal milling machines are one of the most widely used general metal cutting equipment in the field of mechanical processing. With the characteristics of strong rigidity, wide speed regulation range and strong processing adaptability, they can complete various complex processes such as flat surfaces, inclined surfaces, grooves and helical surfaces, and are core equipment in industries such as mold manufacturing, mining equipment and automotive parts processing. However, due to its numerous operation links and complex moving parts, the slightest negligence may lead to safety accidents or cause damage to equipment and workpieces. To ensure both processing accuracy and personal and equipment safety, it is necessary to strictly control every detail throughout the entire process, from pre-operation preparation, standardized operation to daily maintenance.
Ⅰ. Before Operation: Conduct three rounds of checks to prevent risks before starting up

The preparatory work before officially starting the equipment is the core prerequisite for avoiding potential risks in subsequent operations. Three key checks must be completed:

1. Personnel and protective inspection: Operators must pass professional training and assessment before taking up their posts. Before work, they should wear tight-fitting work clothes with cuffs completely fastened. Long hair must be coiled into protective caps. It is strictly prohibited to wear gloves, scarves, ties or other items that can easily get caught in rotating parts. Protective glasses should be worn throughout the process to prevent iron filings from splashing and injuring the eyes.

2. Equipment status inspection: Confirm one by one that each operation handle is in the initial neutral position, check that the lubricating oil level is sufficient, the oil passage is unobstructed, the surface of the guide rail and lead screw is clean and free of debris, the cutting tools and fixtures have no cracks or looseness, and the electrical circuits and protective devices are in good condition and effective. After connecting the power supply, run the machine idle for 3 to 5 minutes first to observe whether there are any abnormal noises or vibrations in the main shaft and feed system, and confirm that all buttons and indicator lights are working properly.

3. Workpiece and process inspection: Carefully check the processing drawings, and select the matching milling cutter and cutting parameters based on the workpiece material and processing thickness. When clamping workpieces, it is necessary to ensure precise positioning and firm clamping. Irregular workpieces should be equipped with auxiliary supports. For rough workpieces, protective pads should be placed on the worktable surface to prevent scratching the surface.

Ⅱ, during operation: Strictly adhere to the details of the norms, taking into account both safety and processing accuracy

After the equipment enters the operating state, every operation step must follow the safety logic and strictly prohibit any violation of regulations.

Before starting the spindle, make sure there is no interference between the tool and the workpiece. First, use manual feed to let the tool slowly approach the workpiece. After confirming that the tool setting position is accurate, switch to motorized feed. It is strictly prohibited to adjust the cutting tools, workpieces or change the speed while the equipment is in operation. Relevant operations must be carried out only after the spindle has completely stopped.

During the processing, please stay fully concentrated throughout. It is strictly forbidden to leave your post without permission. Closely observe the cutting status. Once any abnormal noise, severe vibration, or smoke from the cutting tool occurs, the emergency stop button must be pressed immediately to stop the machine for inspection. Do not restart the equipment until the fault is eliminated. It is strictly prohibited to clean iron filings directly by hand. Special brushes or iron hooks must be used. It is even more forbidden to blow iron filings with your mouth to prevent high-temperature iron filings from splashing and burning your face.

The operation of the reversing handle should follow the standard procedure: Pull the handle outward, rotate it to the required Angle of the milling cutter's rotation direction, and then push it back smoothly to ensure that the handle is fully reset and clamped, avoiding loosening during operation. When the equipment is running at high speed, it is strictly forbidden to forcibly turn the reversing handle; otherwise, it is very likely to damage the transmission gears and even cause the milling cutter to shatter and fly out, injuring people.

Reasonably control the cutting parameters, match the rotational speed and feed rate according to the hardness of the workpiece and the type of tool, and prohibit the equipment from operating under overload conditions. Before using the rapid feed function, it is necessary to check in advance whether the travel limit stop block is firmly fixed to prevent the worktable from directly hitting the limit positions at both ends, which may damage the lead screw and guide rail.

Ⅲ. After Work: Standardize the final maintenance to extend the service life of the equipment

The final maintenance after processing directly determines the long-term operational stability of the equipment and cannot be done carelessly.

Strictly follow the shutdown sequence: first, stop the feed motion, then turn off the main shaft, followed by cutting off the power supply of the cooling pump, and finally turn off the equipment control power supply and the main power supply. Reset all operation handles to the neutral position.

Remove the milling cutters and fixtures in a timely manner, sort and store them in the designated storage area, clean the residual iron filings in the worktable, guide rails and lead screw gaps, wipe the entire equipment with a clean soft cloth, and apply an appropriate amount of lubricating oil to all moving and friction parts to prevent the components from rusting.

Organize the operation site, sort and put the processed workpieces and remaining materials back in place, clean the oil stains and debris on the ground, ensure the unobstructed operation channels, fill in the equipment operation and maintenance records, and truthfully record the processing duration of the day, the equipment operation status and the abnormal problems found.

Iv. Daily Maintenance: Regular maintenance is carried out to reduce the probability of failure

Establishing a regular maintenance mechanism can significantly extend the service life of universal milling machines.

After the daily operation is completed, clean the chips and oil stains on the surface of the equipment, check the oil level of the oil gauge, and replenish the lubricating oil in time if it is insufficient. Check the tightness of all the fastening bolts every week, especially the fixed parts of the main shaft and the lead screw of the worktable. Tighten them immediately if any looseness is found. Check whether the protective devices are intact and without any missing parts.

Conduct a deep lubrication maintenance on the guide rails and lead screws once a month, check whether the cooling system pipelines are unobstructed, and replace the deteriorated cutting fluid in time to avoid clogging the nozzles and affecting the cooling effect.

Check the clearance of the main shaft bearings every quarter, adjust the tightness of the feed drive chain, and clean the dust in the electrical box to prevent short-circuit faults caused by dust accumulation.
