The saddle lathe is a specialized equipment improved on the basis of the ordinary horizontal lathe. Its core structural design aims to solve the processing problems of large-diameter workpieces. It retains the basic components of a traditional lathe while achieving functional expansion through a unique "saddle" structure.
Ⅰ. Basic Structure and Core Components
The saddle lathe is mainly composed of the bed, headstock, feed box, slide box, tool rest, tailstock and other parts. The overall layout is similar to that of a common lathe, but the key difference lies in that the bed at the left end of the headstock is designed in a sunken shape, resembling a saddle , hence the name.
Bed and saddle slot :
The bed is the foundation of the entire machine tool, featuring high-precision guide rails (mountain-shaped and flat guide rails) to ensure the smooth operation of all moving parts. A saddle-shaped groove is provided at the end close to the headstock, on which the detachable guide rail (i.e. "saddle") is installed. When it is necessary to process large-diameter workpieces, this section of the guide rail can be removed, thereby expanding the rotation space of the workpiece and allowing parts with larger diameters to pass through.
Headstock (headstock) :
The headstock is the "power center" of a lathe. It contains a variable speed gear system that can transmit motor power to the spindle and achieve multi-level speed regulation. Take the C6140/6140A model as an example. Its rotational speed range is 25 to 1600 revolutions per minute (with a total of 12 grades), which can meet the cutting requirements of different materials and processes. The diameter of the main shaft through hole is usually ∮52mm, while the larger hole diameter model can reach ∮82mm, which is convenient for inserting long bar stock.
Feed box and lead screw/smooth screw :
The feed box is responsible for adjusting the feed rate or pitch, and transmits the motion to the slide box through the smooth screw or lead screw. Among them, the lead screw is specifically used for turning threads , while the smooth screw is used for longitudinal and transverse feed during general cutting. The two have clear divisions of labor.
Slide box :
The slide box receives the rotational motion from the smooth screw or lead screw and converts it into the linear motion of the tool rest, achieving automatic feed or rapid movement. The operator can control the longitudinal and lateral movement of the tool rest and its rapid positioning through the handle.
Tool rest :
It is composed of a saddle, a medium slide plate, a small slide plate and a tool rest body, which is used to install the turning tool and drive it to move in multiple directions. Some models are equipped with turret tool rests, supporting automatic switching of multiple tools to enhance processing efficiency.
Tailus :
It is installed on the bed guide rail and can move longitudinally along the guide rail and be locked. It is mainly used for the center after installation to support long workpieces, and can also be used to clamp drill bits, reamers, etc. for hole processing. Modern tailstocks have developed advanced forms such as hydraulic drive and numerical control automatic adjustment, enhancing precision and safety.
Ⅱ. Unique Design and Advantages of the saddle Structure
The core innovation of the saddle lathe lies in its detachable saddle structure , which brings three significant advantages:
Expand processing range :
After the saddle is removed, the workpiece can obtain a larger rotational diameter in the saddle groove. For example, the maximum workpiece rotation diameter of the CA6263A lathe in the saddle slot can reach 820mm, far exceeding the processing capacity of the conventional area.
High repeat positioning accuracy :
The saddle structure adopts precise fit and positioning pin design to ensure that it can maintain high geometric accuracy even after disassembly and assembly, without affecting subsequent routine processing tasks.
Is flexible and convenient to operate :
The mode can be quickly switched according to the size of the workpiece - the saddle is retained for ordinary processing, and after disassembly, it is used for processing large-diameter disc-shaped, ring-shaped or irregular-shaped parts, which greatly improves the utilization rate of the equipment.
Ⅲ. Application Scenarios and Applicable Workpieces
Saddle lathes are particularly suitable for processing parts with large radial dimensions and small axial dimensions, such as:
Large flywheels, gears, flanges
Tractor drive wheels, diesel engine crankshafts
Ship thruster components, pressure vessel end covers
Due to its convenient operation and good rigidity, it is often used in small-batch production environments of mechanical manufacturing, agricultural machinery repair, military industry and scientific research units.
