The essence of a slotting machine is a vertical planer . Its core working principle is to complete the slotting process through the coordination of the main cutting motion and the feed motion. The specific operation logic is as follows:
Core motion principle
The movement of the slotting machine is divided into the main motion and the feed motion, and the two work in coordination to complete the cutting.
Main cutting motion : The motor drives the crank to rotate through belt drive and gear drive, converting the rotational motion into the linear reciprocating motion of the ram (carrying the tool) in the vertical direction. The downward stroke is the cutting stroke, and the upward stroke is the return stroke. In design, it generally has a rapid return characteristic - increasing the return stroke speed, reducing the idle stroke time, and improving the processing efficiency.
Feed motion : The workpiece is clamped on the worktable, and the worktable can perform intermittent feed motion along the longitudinal, transverse or circumferential direction : Only when the tool returns (empty return) does the worktable start to adjust the feed position. When the tool is cutting downward, the worktable remains stationary to avoid affecting the cutting accuracy.
Power and transmission flow
The complete power transmission path is as follows: motor → belt drive/gear drive reduction → driving the crank shaft to rotate → converting the rotational motion into the linear reciprocating motion of the ram through the connecting rod mechanism. The intermittent feed motion of the worktable is generally driven by a CAM mechanism or an incomplete gear mechanism to ensure the precise coordination between the feed action and the main cutting action.
Processing adaptation logic
Single-edge broaches used in slotting machines for single-point cutting are mainly suitable for single-piece/small-batch production scenarios. They are particularly adept at processing non-perforated holes, inner keyways with shoulders, splined holes, polygonal holes and other special structures. These scenarios are difficult for milling machines and broaching machines to complete efficiently, while ordinary flat and through-slot processing is usually replaced by more efficient equipment in batch production.
