The guide rails of the lathe bed are usually lubricated by ‌ oil pouring ‌ or ‌ pressure lubrication ‌. Among them, manual oil pouring lubrication is a common and traditional method, which is suitable for most ordinary lathes. For CNC machine tools or high-precision, high-speed operating equipment, forced pressure lubrication systems driven by oil pumps are mostly adopted to ensure continuous and stable lubrication effects.

I. Common Lubrication Methods and Applicable Scenarios

Oil lubrication (manual lubrication) ‌

Pour lubricating oil directly onto the surface of the guide rail through an oil can or an oil gun.

The operation is simple and the cost is low. It is suitable for lathes with low speed, light load or infrequent use.

Regular manual oiling is required, which depends on the maintenance habits of the operators. It is difficult to ensure the uniformity of lubrication.

Pressure lubrication (forced lubrication) ‌

The lubricating oil is delivered to each lubrication point of the guide rail through pipelines by an oil pump, forming a continuous oil film.

It is mostly used in CNC machine tools or large equipment, and can achieve timed and quantitative automatic oil supply, making lubrication more reliable.

It includes forms such as circulating lubrication, oil mist lubrication, and oil-gas lubrication, and is suitable for high-speed and heavy-load working conditions.

Drip lubrication ‌

Use an oil cup or centralized lubrication system to slowly and continuously drip lubricating oil into the friction surface of the guide rail.

It can maintain a certain degree of lubrication continuity and is suitable for the feed guide rail system of medium and small-sized machine tools.

Ⅱ. Suggestions for the Selection of Lubricants

Sliding guide ‌ : It is recommended to use medium-viscosity mechanical oil (such as No. 30 or No. 40), and this type of oil is also suitable for vertical or inclined guide rails to enhance adhesion.

Rolling guide ‌ : Grease (such as lithium-based grease) or lubricating oil can be used, but grease is mostly adopted because it is less prone to leakage and has a longer maintenance cycle.

Special requirements ‌ : The guide rail oil should have good adhesion, oil film strength, oxidation resistance and rust prevention performance to prevent the "crawling" phenomenon and reduce wear.

Ⅲ. Correct lubrication Operation steps

Clean the surface of the guide rail ‌ : Use a clean cloth to remove old oil, chips and dirt.

Select the appropriate oil ‌ : Choose the dedicated guide rail oil according to the type of guide rail and working conditions.

Evenly apply or pour ‌ : ensure that the lubricating oil covers the entire contact surface.

Run the test ‌ : idle for a few minutes to evenly distribute the oil film.

Warm reminder: Regular lubrication not only extends the service life of the guide rail, but also improves the processing accuracy and operational smoothness. If any abnormal noise or poor movement of the guide rail is found, the lubrication condition should be checked in time.
