Ordinary lathes can perform cylindrical processing, capable of turning cylindrical surfaces of different diameters. The processing accuracy can reach IT7-IT8 grades, and the surface roughness Ra value can reach 1.6-3.2μm, for instance, when processing the outer cylindrical parts of shaft components. It can complete the processing of inner holes. Through boring tools and other tools, it can process through holes and blind holes of various sizes. The tolerance of the hole diameter is controlled within a certain range. For example, the installation holes on general mechanical parts are often processed by ordinary lathes. Ordinary lathes can perform thread processing and turn various types of screws

The pitch range of threads, such as metric threads and imperial threads, varies depending on the model of the lathe. Commonly, it can be around 0.25 to 6mm. End face processing is also one of the processing scopes of ordinary lathes. It can turn the end face of the workpiece flat, and the flatness error can be controlled at a relatively small value, generally reaching 0.01-0.03mm. Conical surfaces can be processed. By adjusting the relevant parameters of the lathe, conical surfaces with different taper degrees can be turned out, and the tolerance of the conical half-angle can be controlled within a certain precision range.

Ordinary lathes can perform cutting processing. They use cutting knives to cut bar stock or workpieces as required, and the flatness and verticality of the cutting surface are guaranteed by corresponding processes. Knurling is also within the processing scope of ordinary lathes. Through knurling tools, various patterns such as straight patterns and net patterns are rolled on the surface of the workpiece, and the pitch of the patterns comes in multiple specifications. Be capable of performing center hole processing before drilling.

There are standard requirements for the size and shape accuracy of the center hole, providing an accurate positioning reference for subsequent drilling and other processing. Ordinary lathes can process step shafts and precisely control the diameter, length of each step as well as the positional accuracy between steps. It can also process disc-shaped parts, machining outer circles, inner holes, end faces, etc. on disc-shaped parts to ensure that the dimensional accuracy and positional tolerance of each part meet the design requirements.
