The gantry milling machine, a type of milling machine that combines a gantry frame with a horizontal long bed, stands out for its efficient ability to process large workpieces. Its multiple milling cutters operate simultaneously, not only enhancing the processing accuracy but also significantly improving the production efficiency. In batch and mass production, gantry milling machines can fully demonstrate their capabilities. Whether it is flat surfaces, inclined surfaces, spatial curved surfaces or special-shaped parts, they can handle them with ease.


Next, let's take a deep dive into the exquisite structure of the gantry milling machine together. It is mainly composed of three major parts: the portal frame, the bed worktable and the electrical control system. The portal frame mainly consists of columns and top beams. The middle crossbeam can rise and fall along the column guide rails. At the same time, it is equipped with 1 to 2 milling heads with vertical spindles to achieve lateral movement. In addition, each of the two columns is equipped with a horizontal spindle milling head, which can move up and down and work together to process the surfaces of multiple workpieces.


The horizontal long bed is equipped with a movable worktable and covered with a protective cover to ensure stability and safety during processing. The workpiece is firmly installed on the worktable. As it moves longitudinally, the gantry milling machine begins to process efficiently.


To meet different processing requirements, gantry milling machines have also evolved into various variants. For instance, the gantry boring and milling machine is equipped with a milling and boring head capable of both milling and boring on the crossbeam. Its spindle can perform axial mechanical feed and fine-tuning, enabling precise operations such as boring and milling. The gantry drilling and milling machine is equipped with a power head on the crossbeam. By changing the drill bit or milling cutter through the connecting rod, it can flexibly complete the drilling and milling tasks.

The precise structure of the gantry milling machine


On the bed of the gantry milling machine, we have specially set up an X-axis guide rail to enable the worktable to stably cross over it. Above the workbench is a movable and spanning gantry frame, which not only includes the gantry frame drag plate for clamping the X-axis guide rail but also is equipped with the Z-axis guide rail. The crossbeam section is equipped with a Z-axis drag plate, allowing the crossbeam to move easily along the Z-axis guide rail. In addition, Y-axis guides are carefully arranged on the crossbeam, providing a guarantee for the precise movement of the milling device. Under the precise control of the numerical control circuit control system, the gantry frame can perform three-dimensional space milling processing in the X, Y, and Z axes, demonstrating high-precision milling, drilling, boring, and turning and other diversified operation capabilities.

1. Type classification


According to whether the gantry frame is movable or not, gantry milling machines can be classified into gantry fixed worktable movable type and gantry movable type (also known as bridge type). The bridge-type gantry milling machine, with its compact floor space, excellent load-bearing capacity and a gantry travel of up to 20 meters, is particularly suitable for processing extremely long or heavy workpieces. On the other hand, according to whether the crossbeam moves on the column, gantry milling machines can be divided into two types: moving beam type and fixed beam type. The way the crossbeam moves on the elevated bed is called the elevated type.

Gantry milling machines can be classified into two major categories: ordinary type and CNC type. In recent years, some manufacturers have also launched digital intelligent gantry milling machines that can convert between ordinary milling and CNC milling with just one click. This design makes the equipment more flexible and practical.

3. Ability Level


Gantry milling machines can be further classified into three major categories: light, medium and heavy (or super heavy). This capability division enables the gantry milling machine to meet different processing requirements and enhance the applicability of the equipment.

Operating Instructions for Gantry Milling Machine


When operating a gantry milling machine, special attention should be paid to the following points to ensure the safe and efficient completion of processing tasks

When operating a gantry milling machine, it is essential to ensure that the workpiece is firmly pressed. Screws or special tools can be used for clamping. To prevent accidental injuries caused by slippage, it is strictly prohibited to add sleeves to the wrench.


2. The clamping of the cutting tool is of vital importance. It is strictly prohibited to start the machine tool for operation if the cutting tool is not firmly clamped.


Before starting work, carefully inspect the operation status of the machine tool's transmission parts and ensure that the machine tool's baffles are correctly installed. Only then can the machine tool be started.


4. When milling various workpieces, especially during rough milling, a slow cutting speed should be adopted in the initial stage.


5. Before moving the worktable and tool rest, the fixing screws must be loosened first to ensure smooth and safe movement.


When loading and unloading cutting tools, it is recommended to gently tap them with a copper hammer or wooden mallet to prevent tool fragments from flying out and causing injury.


7. During the cutting process, it is strictly prohibited to change speed or adjust the cutting tool. At the same time, it is forbidden to touch or measure the workpiece by hand to ensure the safety and accuracy of the operation.
